Gen. Musharraf clears way for return to Pakistan
THE former military ruler of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, is planning an audacious attempt to regain power and end two years of exile in London.General Musharraf could face a criminal trial if he returns home and is wanted for questioning over the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
A close aide confirmed that he had applied to set up a new party on behalf of Gen Musharraf, called the All Pakistan Muslim League.
Mohammad Ali Saif, a lawyer who served as a minister under the military ruler, said he would act as leader of the party until Gen Musharraf, 67, returned.
“We have applied to set up a party,” he said. “That’s just a formality. We meet all the requirements and have already started recruiting people.”
He said Gen Musharraf was undaunted by threats against him. “When he decides to come back, he will come back. He left voluntarily, so he can come back any time.”
Allies of Gen Musharraf are being investigated for their role in allegedly destroying evidence after the assassination of Ms Bhutto, who died in a suicide attack after an election rally.
A United Nations report this month concluded that her death could have been prevented had Gen Musharraf’s government not failed in its duties
